I hope no-one is getting too serious

I hope no-one is getting too serious regarding the choice of illustration for the selected birds of Centenary Woodland, most are cribbed from the internet, as is this one of a Chaffinch; nothing like a Chaffinch, I hear you, and I agree, for there is no colour, yet the proportions and topography are recognisable as finch, with the cap and nape contour suggesting Chaffinch.

Very active in Centenary Woodland at the moment, and like many other birds, often seen picking morsels from the woodland floor, maybe seeds or insects for they feed on both according to time of year and availability.

Not everyone appreciates this beautiful creature as evidenced in this cribbed article accompanying the illustration above - 

"Very pretty but common as muck. The scrounger of crisp crumbs, they loiter round car-parks at beauty-spots and even before you’ve got your boots off they’re at your car and after your lunch. Not that they will take a bit from your hand, they’re not that brave."

Do you know your Christmas Trees? (part 2)

Fir at Cannon Hill Park possibly Abies grandis Winter 'evergreens', a suitable and seasonal distraction in terms of identification, providing a rather more challenging activity than the now fallen broad leaves, although having said that, a tree with no leaves is just as challenging when only buds and bark are at play. Also, the language of evergreens is somewhat different to that of broadleaves, in both biological terminology and description, providing a continual monologue through the year, with a voice that changes less hysterically than its broadleaf distant relatives. The other challenging difficulty of course is the weather, standing with a field guide and key on a cold day is not everyone's idea of fun. New Trees - Woodland Wednesdays at Highbury

Highbury Park and neighbours - wooded Wooded Highbury The term 'replete' has recently been used in reference to the wildlife provision at Highbury, and whilst the park can boast a healthy list of trees and bird life and perhaps reasonable opportunity for invertebrates, there is certainly room for enhancement and improvement in this regard.
